Choosing Pool Cue Shafts and Taking Care of Them

There are two types of material to choose from when it comes to buying pool shafts. Wood is the most common choice as it bends a little when it comes into contact with the ball. If you buy a non wood pool cue shaft you will find it has no bend in it at all. While wood is the most popular choice when it comes to shafts, some do prefer the non wood or composite pool cue shafts simply because they do not warp over time. If you don't look after wood shafts you will find that it will warp very easily making it next to useless for your next game. Just one thing about the type of wood; while most pool shafts are made from Ash or Maple, some are made out of Ramin and this really is useless as it warps far too easily meaning you are required to buy a new one too often.

You can get your shafts in either one or two pieces. One piece pool cue shafts are generally of lower quality and the two piece shafts are much easier to carry around. Another thing is that there are joints on these two piece pool shafts and you need to know which one to choose. If you use a wood on wood joint you will find you have more control of the ball and hit softly. The wood on metal will give you a medium hit with a little less control. The metal on metal joint however will give you the hardest hit but of course you have very little control of the ball using this joint.

There are also many types of tip sizes to choose from when buying pool cue shafts and the main thing is to think about how you will be using the pool shafts. If you use a smaller tip you will have more control over where the ball is hit; however, if you like just hitting the ball and hoping something will go in then use a larger tip. The softness of the tip will also control how fast the ball goes. Softer tips have less power; however, you have more control. The harder tips have more power and less control. Remember that softer tips will need replacing more often. Remember to chalk the tip as often as needed to preserve the tip for a longer lasting amount of time.

The weight of your pool shaft is another thing to take into consideration. If you make many hard shots then you will need heavier pool cue shafts; however, if you enjoy the more carefully planned shots that take time then get a lighter pool shaft. If you are male don't get anything lighter than 19 oz.

To maintain your pool cue shafts, you should never scrub it with a harsh cleaning cloth. Instead, dampen a soft cloth in soapy water and wipe the cue and then immediately dry it with another soft cloth. If you regularly remove dust, powder and chalk from your pool shaft it will prolong its life. If you give the shaft a gentle rub down with either furniture polish or a soft wax you will find that it will protect the pool cue shaft until next time you play.
